Launch of book on Monaco’s military involvement in World War I
A book dedicated to a unique period in the history of the Palace Guards was recently published by Les Editions du Précurseur Monaco. The book is titled L’engagement militaire monégasque dans la Grande Guerre (Monegasque Military Involvement in the Great War).
Written by Maréchal des Logis Major (retired) Bruno Vogelsinger and Palace Guard Florent Sicart, the book tells the story of the active involvement of the Palace Guards and Monaco’s firefighters, the majority of whom were French and recalled to serve their country, during the war of 1914 to 1918.
It describes how the Palace was guarded during that time and the losses suffered at the front among the Palace Guards, the firefighters and the Monegasque nationals who signed up to serve voluntarily. It also looks at how the duty of remembrance and homage continue today.
There is a focus on the involvement of Hereditary Prince Louis in the conflict, and of Prince Albert I’s granddaughter, Charlotte de Valentinois.
Richly documented with assistance from Thomas Fouilleron, the Director of the Prince’s Palace Archives and Library, and his team, the book is illustrated with numerous photos, some of which are drawn from the photographic collections held by the Prince’s Palace Archives.
Supported by the Prince Albert I Commemoration Committee, this remarkable work is on sale through the usual distribution channels as well as at the souvenir shop on Place du Palais.
The book will also be presented at the International Military Book Festival, which will be held on 21 and 22 July 2023 at the Écoles de Saint-Cyr Coëtquidan (Saint-Cyr Military Academy).
