Did you know that Monaco offers car license plate for non-residents?

There are multiple ways to register a car with Monaco license plate, even if you are not living in the Principality.

Naturally, anyone who has a Monégasque ID card or a residence permit can register his/her vehicle in the Principality.  

However, if you are not a resident in Monaco you can still find options to obtain a Monaco license plate for your car.

For example, you might have an ownership in an authorised business in Monaco, or you own a property under your own name in the Principality. 

In such cases there is a way to request the registration of your vehicle in the Principality of Monaco on an annual basis. 

The Monégasque vehicle registration plates are unusually smaller than many of the European ones and the plates are a coloured blue font on a white background. Prior to 1979, the colour of the plates was white on blue, without borders. 

“Principauté de Monaco” is written at the bottom of the plate and has the Monégasque coat of arms on the left side with the year number (on the rear plate only) to attest that tax has been paid. 

In the Principality of Monaco license plates are composed of four characters, including numbers and/or letters.

The first character can be a number or the letter:

All plates starting with “000” belong to the Prince’s family.

B, C, E, F, H, K, L, M, N, P, R, S, T or Y for cars, lorries, buses and taxis.

Electric cars get a registration which consists of three numerals, followed by the letter “E”. This was introduced in 2004. 

Monaco license plates starting with “A”: 
Trailer over 750 kg series get a registration which consists of the letter A, followed by three numerals.

Monaco license plates starting with “V”:
Car hire and rental cars in general get a registration which consists of the letter V, followed by three numerals.

Monaco license plates starting with “W”:
Dealer cars registered to a showroom or a car agent get a registration which consists of the letter W, followed by three numerals.

Monaco license plates starting with “X”:
Antique and Classic vehicles (> 25 years old) get a registration which consists of the letter X, followed by three numerals. This was introduced in 1986.

Monaco license plates starting with “Z”:
Cars registered to a foreigner with primary residence outside Monaco may register their foreign car on the temporary license plate starting with Z.

There is a possibility for Provisional license plates. Provisional plates are typically a sticker in white on blue with white border. The registration consists of four numerals, followed by the letters WW MC. The usage of the vehicle is restricted to Monaco and France.

For Temporary transit a special registration plate can be requested that indicates the number assigned to the vehicle, which is comprised of the letters TT followed by a group of two digits.

More than 30 years old vehicles can be registered as a vintage car (restricted use) at the request of the owner.

You can also obtain a custom license plate based on your preference. All you have to do is send a written request with a list of all your preferences. If any of them is available, it will be granted to you.

The registration process is relatively straightforward and there are multiple administrative assistance companies that can help with it. 

In the case that you do not have residency in Monaco, but you own a property, you need to prove that you have a parking space for your car for the period when you are not in the Principality of Monaco. You will also be asked to provide a copy of the latest electricity bill of the property you own in the Monaco territory. 

Once all the documents are in place, the registration certificate can be collected normally 72 hours later from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office.
