Back to school 2025: new learning pathways and well-being in schools

“Learning happens best when pupils feel well at school”: this was the key message delivered at the press conference for the 2025 back-to-school season on 3 September by Mr Lionel Beffre, Minister of the Interior, and Mr Jean-Philippe Vinci, Director of Education, Youth and Sport. They emphasised two inseparable priorities: strengthening learning and fostering a calm, positive school environment.

More ambitious and creative learning pathways

Mathematics is receiving particular attention this year, with the introduction of new workshops (Olympiads, tutoring, logic challenges). Pupils will also have access to training in artificial intelligence to understand and master these tools. Another new development is the introduction of a troisième prépa-métiers class designed to provide more tailored guidance on career orientation. Timetable adjustments are being made at secondary school level, and a pilot scheme for universal access to music is being launched in senior kindergarten classes, in partnership with Monaco City Hall and the Rainier III Academy.

A calmer school climate

In response to issues of addiction and digital overexposure, a flagship measure is being introduced: the “NoPhone” scheme, which will regulate mobile phone use in Year 6 (CM2), secondary schools and high schools. The objective is to protect attention, reduce distraction and anxiety, and combat bullying. Psychological support is also being reinforced, with easier access to professionals, together with philosophy workshops focused on self-esteem and empathy. Young people’s voices will also be heard more widely through the Youth Advisory Commission.

Proud to learn, proud to belong

Another strong signal: from January 2026, Charles III Secondary School will introduce a standardised school outfit, promoting equality, a sense of belonging, and respect for the institution. Other collective events will also punctuate the school year, highlighting cultural, community and sporting initiatives.

Tangible changes for the new school year

Additional measures include the appointment of two new head teachers, the temporary relocation of Lycée Albert I to renovated premises at L’Annonciade (the former Charles III Secondary School), the arrival of a new school catering provider, and a renewed commitment to respect for authority as a founding principle.

The 2025 back-to-school season is thus marked by both academic rigour and well-being: “At ease in their environment, stronger in their learning.”
