Simon Clark

Simon Clark, The Problem Solver

Exclusive interview with Simon Clark โ€“ Serial Entrepreneur, Company Director, Solicitor, and former Law Firm Partner. He is also a highly experienced and versatile Head of Legal with a strong track record in compliance, reputation management, general business operations, as well as complex litigation and cross-border regulatory enquiries and investigations across EMEA, Asia, and the US.

British-born Simon Clark is not only a long-term resident of the Principality of Monaco but also a lifelong admirer of it.

At around 12 years old, while vacationing with his parents in the South of France, Simonโ€™s mother asked him what he thought he might do with his life. His answer was remarkably prophetic: โ€œIโ€™m going to sell yachts or cars in Monaco.โ€

Decades later, what could have been dismissed as a childโ€™s fantasy became a (mostly) accurate prediction.

โ€œIโ€™ve often reflected on that childhood memory,โ€ โ€“ says Simon. โ€“ โ€œAs a kid, I was captivated by the supercars and yachts in the port. They looked like my dream toys. I remember just standing there, completely mesmerised. Many years later, I returned to the place where my fascination began, and turned it into reality.โ€

Simon moved to the Principality in 2018 and hasnโ€™t looked back.

Over the past two decades, he has founded several businesses, each distinct in their offerings but collectively focused on serving the needs of Ultra-High-Net-Worth Individuals (UHNWIs) and some of the worldโ€™s most demanding corporations.

โ€œWe found an unstated demand for problem solving,  agility, outside-the-box thinking and absolute discretion. That is what we bring across a range of services,โ€ โ€“ commented Simon sitting overlooking Monacoโ€™s world-famous harbour.

Before Monaco, Simon had an impressive first career in financial services and law, with experience at Lehman Brothers, Salomon Brothers, UBS, and Tullett Prebon – now the worldโ€™s largest money broker.

After a short spell as a Partner at the leading law firm HFW (then Holman Fenwick Willan) Simon moved to the Principality as head of legal affairs in an industry leading global yacht company dealing with yacht brokerage, construction, operations, and charter.

โ€œIt was amazing to be surrounded by these incredible assets,โ€ โ€“ he reflects. โ€“ โ€œBut it was also a reality check – I was there to facilitate someone elseโ€™s dream, you need to keep your feet on the ground, and you must not forget that.โ€

Despite that, Simon can feel quietly comfortable that his choices have played out well, especially with those he has chosen to build his businesses with and whom he calls colleagues.

โ€œI learned from an early age that those who are successful surround themselves with the best people they can find; business is about creating a bigger pie in which we can all share. That is what I have tried to do with my companies, and I think we have been successful,โ€ โ€“ he observed.

Is Monaco a Competitive Market?

โ€œThe yachting industry is never simple. You deal with complex personalities and multifaceted family offices. You have to be part owner, part lawyer, , part business strategist. Itโ€™s demanding. Sometimes it feels that you are a conductor of an orchestra.

Because the industry is not always straightforward, quite often complications arise, you have to conduct rigorous KYC checks, deal with legal matters, cross-jurisdictions, etc. But if youโ€™re methodical, systemised and organised, you can manage it.โ€

Since the end of 2022, Simon and his colleagues have established Richmond Park Associates, Vaultz Capital, Yacht Informer, and will soon launch Kempra. It is Simonโ€™s intention to expand and, with a fair wind, bring them all to the Principality in due course.

Richmond Park Associates

Richmond Park Associates is a full-service boutique legal consultancy (based in Dubai) catering to high-net-worth individuals and corporates in the maritime, aviation, and high value assets arena

The company has organically grown supporting family offices and clients more generally who rely on it for strategy and operational support.

Simon, having always paid homage to his roots in law as a solicitor, has maintained a UK legal practicing certificate since 1993. With his guidance and insight, the Richmond Park Associates team handles cross-jurisdictional disputes and transactional matters in some of the worldโ€™s biggest yachting and aircraft sale, construction, and management projects, as well as the occasional collectibles item – be it a piece of artwork or luxury car. The Richmond Park Associates team currently consists of lawyers qualified in the UK, Italy, Lebanon and Cyprus.

Yacht Informer

Yacht Informer is already incorporated in the Principality and provides a platform for yacht owners, suppliers, and enthusiasts. In particular, it will take forward themes of sustainability and care for the environment.

โ€œOur clients also recognise the importance of these topics too, as no one can ignore what a privilege it is to live on the Cรดte dโ€™Azur and in the Principality by a clear blue ocean. In fact, we are in the exciting phase of actively recruiting full time employees for Yacht Informer to build out the brand.โ€

Vaultz Capital

Vaultz Capital is a licensed, regulated payments business, offering multi-currency accounts for individuals and businesses.

โ€œThis is our first FinTech, a neo bank, and it was established as a result of the specific requirements of Richmond Park Associatesโ€™ customers.โ€

It offers a disruptive alternative to established providers through a combination of secure technology, including encryption, AI fraud detection, 24/7 monitoring, regulatory adherence; and a range of services. Vaultz Capital moulds its model to its customersโ€™ demands โ€“ not the other way around.

Kempra

Kempra is yet another exciting development Simonโ€™s team is leading.

โ€œAround the time of the Monaco Yacht Show we will see the formal association established between a well-established Zurich based law firm of more than 40 yearsโ€™ experience and Richmond Park Associates. This is a very exciting development, particularly for Richmond Park Associates, as we have merged expertise which is totally complementary,โ€ โ€“ explains Simon.

Richmond Park Associatesโ€™ sister companies include a forensic firm which has operated for almost 20 years, giving the team, and – most importantly – its clients, an edge on many areas including crypto. After all, if you can locate missing crypto (which we do), you can be a safe crypto merchant (which they are).

Company Culture & Talent

The work ethos in all Simonโ€™s companies is very much focussed on creating a modern, hardworking, respectful, working environment, and one without hierarchy.

As Simon puts it, the only difference between himself and his colleagues (aside from a vast array of different skill sets) is that he reserves the right to occasionally say โ€œnoโ€ โ€“ after all someone has to โ€“ but the team is of course encouraged to challenge him when he does (and they sure do).

Reputation in the ultra-high-net-worth market is unforgiving. So how does Simon build his team?

โ€œThe truth is, people choose us. Every time we post a job opening on LinkedIn, we receive at least 1,500 applications. Itโ€™s a fascinating business sector, and people are eager to be a part of it.โ€

Where is the team based?

โ€œOur focus is on expertise – not geography. That being said, we donโ€™t have fixed location requirements. Our team members are based all over the world, because what matters to us is the value they bring, not where they sit. Whether someone works from an office, their home, or a hotel, it doesnโ€™t matter – as long as the job gets done. Thatโ€™s why the sector is attractive: itโ€™s results-driven and merit-based.โ€

Simon is equally proud of the bonds within the team. They have grown together, thrived, and shared lifeโ€™s milestones –  and are now looking forward to the arrival of a baby.

โ€œWeโ€™re like a family, and I like it that way. We support each other and draw strength from one another.โ€

Simon places great reliance on his team โ€“ the average age is around 30 (an age carefully curated by excluding himself from the statistics). The team is bright, energetic, and creative, comprising eight people (and growing) across six jurisdictions and more than 12 languages.

โ€œOur most recent hire lives in Beirut and complements those in the team in Dubai, London, Zurich, and of course Monaco. After all, our client base is global, so it is only right that the business demographic reflects that.โ€

Settling Down in Monaco

The Principality of Monaco was an obvious choice for Simon, both personally and professionally. It stands as a global hub for the superyacht industry, with many of his clients residing in or frequently visiting Monaco. With excellent infrastructure and communication links – particularly its proximity to Nice Airport, just 30 minutes away – Simon finds Monaco an exceptionally convenient place to do business.

Living in such a culturally diverse environment, Simon quickly recognised Monacoโ€™s unique ability to bring together people from all walks of life. Regardless of gender, nationality, or background, Monaco fosters collaboration.

โ€œAs we look to grow, we are mindful of the need to find and attract talent, and a really important consideration for us is the recruitment pool, which includes not only established experts in their fields but also those starting out on their career journey and the educational system in Monaco produces very employable career entrants.โ€

The Principality is often described as administratively rigorous. So how does that work for someone like Simon, who deals with time-sensitive, complex international matters?

Why did you choose Monaco?

โ€œWell, partly because I live here,โ€ โ€“ he laughs. โ€“ โ€œBut honestly, I havenโ€™t found Monaco to be overly bureaucratic. Rigorous is not a criticism! On the contrary – Iโ€™ve encountered a great deal of support when setting up our business. Monaco is a natural hub for the industries we work in: yachting, aviation, art, social media Weโ€™re not here to compete, weโ€™re here to support and help those sectors flourish.โ€

Simon also praises the efficiency and professionalism of Monacoโ€™s government institutions. Booking appointments with local authorities is straightforward, and heโ€™s found the teams to be accommodating and business-savvy.

โ€œIโ€™ve been so impressed with the level of service here that I wish I could publicly thank our lawyers and bankers – but of course, discretion is key.โ€

Add to that the world-class restaurants, accommodations, year-round security, and idyllic climate – and thereโ€™s very little not to love.

โ€œWhen Iโ€™m not working, which is rare, work is my hobby,โ€ โ€“ he jokes.

What about the local community?

โ€œItโ€™s a small, close-knit community, and I find it very friendly. Sometimes Iโ€™m here with my wife or family, but often Iโ€™m not. Still, Monacoโ€™s intimacy means you quickly get to know people – whether at the gym, in restaurants, or around town.โ€

And have you met any of your idols here?

โ€œSo many wonderful people! I remember being at Club 39 only a fortnight ago and spotting Magic Johnson training.

I tried my best to be discreet, but I mustโ€™ve been staring because he turned to us and said, โ€˜Guys, hi. What a lovely day to be in Monaco – and Iโ€™m alive, and you guys are alive.โ€™ He was so relaxed and gracious, taking photos with everyone. A truly inspiring man.โ€

Yachting cliente

As for the superyacht industry, do you see a pattern among typical clients?

โ€œNo. There was a time when people assumed that most yachts were owned by individuals from the East, but thatโ€™s no longer the case. Today, superyachts are owned by successful individuals and corporations across the globe, from East to West.โ€

Who is your main competitor in Monaco?

โ€œWe donโ€™t compete, we complement,โ€ โ€“ smiles Simon. โ€“ โ€œWe typically operate in the middle, as we have clients on both sides of the industry. Because this business runs on trust, people often come to us to ensure their projects are managed professionally and reach the best possible outcome.โ€

Simon and his team frequently act as intermediaries between shipyards and future yacht owners. This role is critical, particularly when the client lacks experience. Rather than leaving shipyards to educate clients from scratch, Simonโ€™s team helps navigate contracts, design processes, and the build process – streamlining communication and ensuring alignment.

โ€œItโ€™s a win-win,โ€ โ€“ he says. โ€“ โ€œClients avoid costly learning curves, and shipyards benefit from a smoother, more informed process.

I love spending time with my clients. Sometimes, we simply chat – and they truly value that. One of my clients, who faces numerous challenges globally, calls me most evenings. In many ways, Iโ€™ve become a sounding board, helping him process the dayโ€™s progress and prepare for the next. When you help people manage fears, solve problems, and realise their dreams, you become more than a business – you become a trusted confidant, often considered a friend.โ€

What is the most rewarding aspect of your work?

โ€œSeeing my clientsโ€™ dreams come true. Iโ€™ll never forget the look on one coupleโ€™s faces during the delivery of their yacht. After four years of planning and construction, there it was – on the water, exactly as they envisioned it. At this level, our projects are about making something deeply personal come to life. That moment of satisfaction is the greatest reward.โ€

The majority of your work begins once the yachts are in operation. What are the typical challenges UHNW clients face?

โ€œThereโ€™s a wide variety. Some involve navigating complex legal and tax compliance issues, which are straightforward – if you know what youโ€™re doing. But then there are operational challenges, like unexpected visits from Port State Authorities, where paperwork must precisely match whatโ€™s on board.

Occasionally, we encounter discrepancies -like safes containing undeclared items- which must be handled delicately. And, unfortunately, there are also times when accidents occur and must be addressed quickly and sensitively. Disputes can also occur โ€“ but often what is required is a common sense, non-point scoring approach to find a fair outcome.โ€

And on the corporate side?

โ€œWe once dealt with a case where a large asset was impounded and ultimately released Our client brought us in, and it evolved into quite a geopolitical issue. We love these kinds of challenges, they test us. Over the years, no two days have ever been the same.โ€

The Problem Solver

Do you solve more problems or make dreams come true?

โ€œThey go hand in hand, but itโ€™s fair to say that we encounter more problems than dreams. Our clients face a wide range of challenges, whether related to their personal lives, businesses, assets, or other activities.

Sometimes, the most rewarding part is sitting down with someone and helping them realise that what they perceive as a problem isnโ€™t actually one. You listen, you analyse, and you compartmentalise. Thereโ€™s always an angle, a way forward.โ€

Who is your typical client?

โ€œItโ€™s a mix. While our services are primarily geared toward ultra-high-net-worth individuals and those who own or manage high-value assets, sometimes the nature of the issue itself defines the engagement. Someone may approach us with a particularly unique or interesting challenge, and thatโ€™s often what drives our involvement.โ€

Given your experience with a wide range of luxury assets, can you share a particularly challenging case?

โ€œWe once worked on the sale of a reasonably well-known piece of art. It turned out to be genuine, but it was a genuine replica created by the original artist. The buyer had believed it was the original piece, and in some ways, it was. But legally and commercially, it was classified differently.

Navigating that situation required careful communication with the client and various parties to clarify its status and implications. The nuances in such cases can be complex. The outcome was fair.โ€

What types of issues do you find most challenging?

โ€œWeโ€™re always drawn to cross-border, multi-national, and multi-jurisdictional challenges. The more layers of complexity, the more engaged we become. Thatโ€™s where our global expertise truly shines.โ€

Helicopter Pilot & Family Man

Simon is a loving husband to an accomplished psychotherapist and father to two grown up daughters in London (one an actor, and the other a fitness major and talented tutor).

You recently participated in a 10 km running competition. How did that come about?

โ€œOne thing Iโ€™ve noticed among all our clients, young or old, is that to keep your mind active, you need to stay physically fit. My daughter, who is a fitness trainer in the UK, teamed up with my personal coach at the local fitness club here in Monaco. Together, they convinced me to take on the challenge. All I can say is that during our first run, it was probably easier to measure our progress with a calendar than a stopwatch,โ€ โ€“ laughs Simon. โ€“ โ€œBut in the end, I managed to complete the 10 km in a reasonable time. Since then, I really look forward to my Thursday night runs. All thanks to the motivation I received from my daughter and my PT, Maud in Larvotto.โ€

What has been the most challenging decision in your career?

โ€œThere were two. The first was deciding to start my own company – an idea that was actually encouraged by those around me. Thatโ€™s how Richmond Park Associates began. Indeed, Dubai was chosen as two of the team asked if they could live there. That in many ways shows how we are.

The second challenge has been maintaining a functioning personal life when my wife, family, and I are all in different places. Itโ€™s not easy when you have to schedule time just to see each other, and keeping that balance requires ongoing effort. My wife often jokes that Iโ€™m part of the reason why she became a psychotherapist,โ€ โ€“ he giggles.

Simon also has a unique passion – he is a helicopter pilot in the UK, and, when he is not on client meetings in some corner of the world, can be found running in Larvotto, participating in the arts, reading his favourite novel, The Great Gatsby, or driving an old sport car in Monaco.

Whatโ€™s the most valuable lesson youโ€™ve learned in life?

โ€œTreat others as you wish to be treated โ€“ a mantra that has served us all well.  Itโ€™s something Iโ€™ve always carried with me.โ€

As for the future, one thing is clear. Simonโ€™s biggest challenge will be keeping up with thriving projects, blossoming partnerships, and his hard-working ambitious team!
