In a world increasingly driven by speed, automation, and scale, true craftsmanship has become a rare and valuable language. Few brands embody this philosophy as elegantly as Calzoleria Toscana, a house where tradition is not preserved for nostalgia, but refined into a modern expression of understated luxury.
Rooted in the rich artisanal heritage of Tuscany, Calzoleria Toscana represents more than footwear. It is a story of patience, precision, and respect for materials, where every pair is the result of a process that prioritises quality over quantity, and longevity over trends.
Calzoleria Toscana was founded in 1958 by Luciano Bettaccini. Its origins lies in one of the world’s most celebrated regions for leather craftsmanship. Tuscany has, for centuries, been synonymous with exceptional tanning techniques and artisanal savoir-faire. It is here that Calzoleria Toscana draws its inspiration, blending historical knowledge with contemporary sensibility.
What did it mean, in that post-war Italy, to open an artisan shoemaker’s workshop in Val di Nievole?
“At that time, Italy was in the midst of what is known as the economic miracle; the country was rapidly transitioning from an agricultural to an industrial economy. Shoe manufacturers were part of a strongly growing sector (fashion and manufacturing), responding to an increasing domestic demand for consumer goods. In those days, the small shoemaking workshop was a production model typical of the area: flexible, family-run, and deeply rooted in the territory.”
Each shoe begins with carefully selected leathers, often sourced from some of Italy’s most respected tanneries. The materials are chosen not only for their aesthetic appeal, but for how they will age, evolve, and develop character over time. This philosophy transforms each pair into something personal, shaped by the wearer’s journey.
“We have always focused on quality and on work done well. That vision has never changed - rather, it has evolved. Through the generational transition, we felt a precise responsibility: not to preserve the past in a static way, but to translate it into something living. Craftsmanship for us is not nostalgia, it is method. It means attention to detail, knowledge of materials, respect for the time it takes to do things well.”

Behind every Calzoleria Toscana shoe lies a meticulous process, where human skill remains at the centre of creation. From cutting the leather to shaping the last, stitching, and finishing, each stage demands both technical mastery and artistic sensitivity.
Hand-finishing techniques give the shoes their distinctive depth of colour, subtle patinas that cannot be replicated by machines. The result is footwear that feels alive, with nuances that make each pair unique.
This attention to detail extends beyond aesthetics. Comfort, structure, and durability are integral to the design. These are shoes made not only to be admired, but to be worn, day after day, year after year.
Calzoleria Toscana does not follow fashion cycles. Instead, it embraces a design language rooted in timeless elegance. Classic silhouettes: oxfords, loafers, boots are reinterpreted with a contemporary touch, ensuring relevance without compromising identity.
This restraint is intentional. True luxury, after all, does not demand attention, it earns it quietly.
Calzoleria Toscana offers two distinct identities: the main brand and Rosso Fiorentino.
“The two lines represent two different expressions of the same manufacturing culture. Calzoleria Toscana follows an artisan tradition and a sober, classic, and refined aesthetic. Rosso Fiorentino (produced using the tinto in capo method) was born with a more contemporary and dynamic attitude.
Calzoleria Toscana speaks to an essential, elegant man who seeks a timeless style. Rosso Fiorentino, on the other hand, speaks to a more dynamic and contemporary man who loves to interpret the classic with personality.”
In places like Monaco, where elegance is expressed through detail rather than excess, this philosophy resonates naturally. It is not about logos or statements, but about the quiet assurance of quality.
While deeply rooted in Tuscany, Calzoleria Toscana speaks to a global audience. Its clientele values discretion, craftsmanship, and the subtle confidence that comes from wearing something truly well-made.

The tinto in capo method is at the heart of Rosso Fiorentino’s patented technique, which gives those shoes an inimitable chromatic depth.
“The leather shoe with a leather sole, once it has reached the finishing stage, is treated in a drum (a large washing machine) where it remains for eight hours and is washed with natural vegetable processes and products; after which the shoes are put on lasts to rest for at least two days. The shoe is dyed when it is completely finished - in this way, each material absorbs the colour differently, creating unique nuances and a non-uniform chromatic depth. It is precisely this controlled irregularity that makes each shoe so distinctive and inimitable. This process also gives the shoe a unique and distinctive appearance, as well as a style of true natural vintage and a unique softness that will last over time.”
The Monaco Style
In contrast to disposable fashion, Calzoleria Toscana champions longevity. A well-crafted shoe is an investment, not just financially, but emotionally. Over time, the leather softens, the patina deepens, and the shoe becomes a reflection of its owner.
This enduring quality aligns with a broader shift in luxury consumption: a move towards authenticity, sustainability, and meaning.
The summer in Monaco is synonymous with the Grand Prix, galas in the harbour, evenings at the Opéra Garnier. Which model from your collection would you recommend for a man who, within a few hours, must move from the paddocks of the Circuit de Monaco to a gala dinner at the Café de Paris?
“For such a dynamic setting, you need a shoe capable of crossing different moments without losing elegance. The ideal choice is a leather loafer - perhaps made using the tinto in capo technique - or a clean-lined buckle shoe. These are versatile models that maintain a relaxed elegance during the day but gain refinement in the evening hours.”
Loafers, slip-ons, lace-ups, Chelsea boots, buckles, fine leather sneakers: your collection covers a wide spectrum of styles. How do you manage to maintain such a recognisable stylistic coherence while moving between such different forms?
“Coherence does not come from the form, but from the language with which we interpret it. Whether it is a loafer or a sneaker, what remains constant is our approach: balanced proportions, attention to detail, choice of materials, and an aesthetic that shuns excess.”
Monaco is home to an exceptionally high-profile international clientele, accustomed to the great names of fashion. What does Calzoleria Toscana offer that the most prestigious maisons cannot provide?
“The great maisons offer recognition and image; we offer authenticity. Calzoleria Toscana is born from a supply chain of hands that work every day on the product, from a direct relationship with materials and craftsmanship. This translates into a non-standardised quality. In a context like Monaco, the real difference lies not in ostentation but in the depth of knowing where what you wear comes from.”
Speaking of leathers and materials: your range spans from suede calf to cordovan, from chamois to buffalo, up to precious crocodile finishes. How does the selection of raw materials take place, and where do your reference tanneries come from?
“We select leathers of the highest quality, exclusively from Tuscan tanneries. The choice is based not only on aesthetics but on how the material will respond to the manufacturing process and to ageing over time.”
You also have a high-level leather sneaker line, including models in calf leather and crocodile. How does the sneaker reconcile with the tradition of classic shoemaking? Is it a creative tension or a natural evolution?
“For us it is a natural evolution, more than a tension. The sneaker is not an alternative to the classic shoe, but an extension of its language. The use changes, but the same principles remain: quality of materials, care in construction, and attention to detail.”
If you had to choose just one pair from the current collection as the perfect emblem of the Monégasque summer - the sun, the sea, the Côte d’Azur, effortless elegance - which would it be and why?
“If we had to choose a single model, it would be a suede leather loafer, perhaps in a light tone such as sand or natural tan. It is a shoe that perfectly embodies effortless elegance: light, soft, easy to wear and yet refined at the same time.”
What do you wish for someone who puts on a pair of Calzoleria Toscana for the very first time?
“We wish that in wearing them for the first time, they feel not just a shoe, but a presence. That every step carries a weight that is light yet conscious - made by the hands that built it, and by time that slowly settles into the leather.”

The Creative Process
Italian men’s footwear has a centuries-long history. Who are, in the historical and contemporary landscape, the masters and traditions that Calzoleria Toscana looks upon with greatest admiration and respect?
“For us, the most authentic reference remains the craft itself: that combination of gestures, proportions, and sensibility that defines a well-made shoe. It is there that we continue to find inspiration more than in individual names.”
How has the taste of your typical client evolved in recent years? Do they still seek the formal shoe par excellence, or is there a new demand for a more fluid and informal elegance?
“In recent years, the client’s taste has evolved noticeably towards a more fluid elegance. The formal shoe has not disappeared, but it is no longer the only point of reference. Today the client seeks versatility: models that can accompany them in different contexts, from work to leisure, without sacrificing quality and style.”
How is a new model born? Where does the inspiration come from - the historical archive, the street, the fabrics, something else?
“The creative process always begins from a balance between memory and observation. On one side there is the archive: shapes, proportions, and details that are part of our history and that we continue to reread. On the other there is the contemporary gaze: changes in lifestyle and the way shoes are worn today. From here begins a process of synthesis, in which tradition and innovation come together to create something new yet coherent with our language.”
The names of your models - Sommo, Bormio, Varzi, Fasano, Tivoli - seem almost like a map of Italy. What does this way of naming the shoes say about you?
“Yes, it is a deliberate choice. Giving models the names of Italian places is a way of remaining connected to our roots while at the same time conjuring an imaginary or an atmosphere. They are not just names, but cultural references. It is like tracing an ideal map of Italy through shoes, where each model carries with it a precise character.”
Safeguarding Legacy
The workshops of Calzoleria Toscana are located in the heart of Val di Nievole. At a time when production outsourcing has been the norm for many Italian brands, Calzoleria Toscana remained rooted in that territory.
“We decided to stay where everything began - not out of inertia, but because here there exists a heritage that cannot be transferred elsewhere: skills, manual craftsmanship, a culture of work, and a healthy supply chain built over time.”
You have boutiques in Florence and Milan. Why these two cities, and how do the two shopping experiences differ in terms of atmosphere and clientele?
“Florence and Milan represent two complementary souls of our world. Florence is the root: a more intimate experience, linked to artisan tradition and a client who seeks authenticity and narrative. Milan is the contemporary projection: more dynamic and international, with a clientele attuned to fashion and innovation. Two different cities, but united by the same thread: quality.”
In an era in which luxury has progressively democratised - or at least so it is said - what is, for you, the true definition of luxury as applied to footwear?
“For us, luxury is not a matter of accessibility or visibility, but of substance. For us, luxury is time, matter, and expertise. Applied to footwear, it means creating a product that does not simply follow a trend, but that builds a relationship with the person who wears it - one destined to last over time.”
Sustainability has become a priority in the fashion industry. How does Calzoleria Toscana position itself with regard to the environmental impact of shoe production?
“For us, sustainability is not a recent trend, but a natural consequence of the way we work. Producing in Italy, with a short and controlled supply chain, already means reducing the impact related to transport and outsourcing. There is also a less visible - and perhaps more important - aspect: durability. Making a shoe that is born to last over time is a concrete form of sustainability. We believe that true sustainable luxury means producing better and less, giving value to what is created. Many of our shoes are also made with vegetable-tanned leather, meaning leather whose tanning uses natural tannins extracted from plants, bark, and leaves.”
Looking at the international market, which countries or cultures have given you the most surprising and unexpected response to your product?
“We have found interesting responses in different contexts, each with its own sensibility. In Italy there is a natural understanding of the product: the client immediately recognises quality, construction, and proportions, because they are part of the culture. In North America we have encountered an openness towards a more refined elegance: there is curiosity, a desire to stand out, and great attention to the value of Made in Italy. In Asia, finally, we have found a very refined, almost analytical sensibility: the product is observed in depth - in its materials, its craftsmanship, its details.”
Ultimately, Calzoleria Toscana is not just about shoes. It is about a way of thinking, one that values time, skill, and authenticity in a world that often overlooks them.
In every stitch, every finish, and every step, it reminds us that true luxury is not created in haste. It is crafted, patiently, by hand.
